The Betrayal of Christ
Summary
Narrative figure-group panel, carved in high relief. At the forefront of the group is a male figure lying on the floor, raising his torso up on one elbow, a staff on the ground beside him held in his hand; this is the figure of the High Priest's servant, whose ear was cut off by Peter as punishment for hearing the words of betrayal (according to John, it was his right ear that was cut off). The figure of Peter stands to the left of the group, behind the head of the High Priest's servant, holding a knife in his hand (his head is missing); the body of the group are closely stood together, at the right of the panel, and show Judas embracing Christ as a sign to the armed soldiers to arrest him. Mounted on a perspex stand.
