Summary

Cluttered domestic interior with a white-haired elderly woman sitting to the left of a small table, reading from a large heavy book. The table covered with a white cloth and laden with a gaslamp, teapot, cup, saucer and plate, and the remains of a simple meal on a tray. The wall behind the table hung with various objects including a wall clock on which sits a candle holder and small weather house, a stuffed magpie in a glass case, several pictures with various dried flowers and pieces of paper stuck into or behind their frames, and a small silhouette of a man. A set of bamboo shelves to far right, on the top shelf of which sits a tall vase of wilting flowers. Small footstool to right of table, patterned carpet on the floor.
