An Aran Village

John Bold 1895 - 1979

Summary

A foreboding landscape scene of an Aran Village with black, dramatically windswept trees and a looming black and grey sky. Various buildings are depicted in the background painted in a simplistic style using block colours and very little detail. There is lively emerald green detail within the landscape representing ploughed fields, and a network of dry stone walls functions to compartmentalise the fields. The paintwork offers a light coverage so the white of the canvas is still visible in parts. The foreground depicts sections of architecture, cut off by the framing of the picture. There is a horse-shoe shaped walled-section of garden to the left of the image. The painting is semi-abstract as it reduces visible detail within the landscape, this works to accentuate the forms within the scene. It also appears semi-surreal because of the seeming impossibility of some of the forms and perspectives.
