James II

Sir Godfrey Kneller (follower of) 1646 - 1723

Summary

A dramatic full-length portrait of James II, in long wig and dressed in armour and a heavy, black, ermine-trimmed cloak falling into folds at his feet. He stands posed with his left hand on his hip, hidden by the cloak, and a sceptre held in his outstretched right hand. In the background to left, a crown and orb sit on a red velvet cushion on a tall stone pedestal, beneath a painted coat of arms. There is a seascape in the background to the right, with a tall ship in full sail against a dramatically lit sky.
