Angels Around the Cross

Norman Adams 1927 - 2005

Summary

A system of overlapping semi-transparent curves and oscillating bands form an abstract arrangement in mid-brown ochre, with naturalistic floral motifs or ‘badges’ painted in various shades of orange, yellow and pink across the foreground of the image arranged in a surreal fashion. The left-hand cluster of ‘badges’ are illuminated, whereas the right-hand cluster to the top and bottom of the frame are cast in shadow. A crucifix shape is detectable in the centre of the painting as is the recurring circular shape. The background is rose-pink in colour with exposed patches of white.
