Summary

Near Northenden. This is said to be the oldest timber house in Lancashire or Cheshire. It retains considerable traces of its splendour under the rule of its former owner, Sir Wm. Baggiley (in the time of Edward II.), whose effigy lies in the great hall, and who was ancestor, through his daughter, who married Sir John Hyde, of Queens Mary and Ann. The great hall is built of huge beams of oak;
