Village in Russia

Thomas Swimmer 1932

Summary

A detailed painting of a village in Russia, the perspective is in the shade, from the ground just next to a village wall, which takes up the canvas from the right hand side. The viewer sees across a small patch of dry ground to a row of old, flaking stone bungalows. An old woman can be seen crossing the ground to the dwelling, carrying something on her back. Behind the row of houses there are taller buildings of the same kind, with the dome of a mosque (surmounted by an Islamic crescent) rising out of the middle. The presence of the mosque suggests a setting in the southern Tatarstan or Caucasus regions where Muslim minorities reside. The colours and outlines are sharp and clear.
