Alexander McQueen 1969 - 2010

Summary

Long-sleeved evening dress, tunic or cheongsam, screen-printed with a photographic print and beaded with clear pailettes.. This is an early catwalk piece from McQueen's 'Joan' collection AW 1996. McQueen focussed on the legend of Joan of Arc as a strong but doomed woman and he also referenced other tragic female figures, such as the 3 young Romanov princesses in the embroidered photographic print on this dress, running vertically in two and a half sections from neck to hem. The shaping of the outfit mirrors the simple traditional Chinese cheongsam- style of tunic with a diagonal bodice opening and side slits to the skirt hem..
