Summary

Public: Square dust-pressed earthenware tile with blue design, transfer-printed on white ground under clear glaze, of Bottom from Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Private: Square dust-pressed earthenware tile, with blue design transfer-printed on a white ground under a clear glaze. The design consists of the character Bottom, with a man's body and an ass's head, sitting on the ground in a woodland setting. He faces towards the front and left, making an open-handed gesture; his left hand rests on the ground at his left side, while his right hand is raised to shoulder level. He wears a long-sleeved collared tunic which is girdled at the waist, and a pair of slipper-like shoes. In the left background, a bearded man with astonished expression and gaping mouth looks at Bottom between the trunks of two trees. Tile back: grid of 64 impressed squares.
