River scene with a ruined tower on the bank and figures in rowing boats
Summary
Little is known about the Haarlem painter, Heeremans. He painted river scenes and landscapes in the manner of Ruisdael, and was also noted for his lively skating scenes. This busy river scene is set against an Italianate backdrop of a picturesque ruined tower covered in weeds, and other buildings. Two rowing boats full of passengers are moored on the opposite bank, while another crosses the river behind them. The riverbank outside the cottage is busy with people. The grassy bank of the near shore, where the viewer supposedly stands, is visible in the lower left of the picture.
