A Party of Falconers Outside the Gates of a Chateau
Johannes Lingelbach 1622 - 1674
Summary
Johannes Lingelbach was born in Frankfurt am Main. The family had moved to Amsterdam by 1634 and Lingelbach presumably trained there, although there is no record of his teacher. He was in Rome from 1644-50 and even after his return north, his work continued to show the influence of Italian landscape painting, which became popular with Dutch patrons in the second half of the 17th century. Lingelbach probably painted this hunting scene after his return to Amsterdam from Rome. The grand villa may be imaginary, but it creates an impressive backdrop to this richly dressed party. Lingelbach was celebrated for his depictions of figures and horses, which were inspired by the paintings of Philips Wouwerman. A talented figure painter, he is known to have painted figures into landscapes by Philips Koninck, Jacob van Ruisdael, Jan Hackaert, Jan Wijnants and Frederick de Moucheron, among others.
