Peasants Playing Cards and Skittles in a Yard
David Teniers The Younger 1610 - 1690
Summary
Teniers' peasants are enjoying a leisurely afternoon outside a tavern: card players decide their next move and a bowler is poised to roll his ball. The prancing, carefree dog in the foreground adds a delightful detail. Teniers was a well-connected Flemish artist and came from an established family of painters. In 1637 he married Anna Bruegel, the granddaughter of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who was famed for his paintings of peasants and landscapes. Teniers was greatly influenced by both him and Frans Francken the Younger.
