Summary

Spherical gold teapot with straight spout at 45 degrees,and carved wood scroll handle; circular foot ring; hanged lid with carved finial. Body engraved on 1 side with the Royal Arms of George 11 in Scotland; and on the other with a racehorse and jockey. Engraved as the King's Plate for Leith 1736

Gold teapot 1736 James Ker, Edinburgh This gold teapot references two luxury commodities of the 18th century – gold and tea. It is a copy of a gold teapot awarded to the winner of the Leith Races, the most important horseracing event in Scotland in the 18th century. The original teapot is now displayed at the National Museum of Scotland. Both teapots are engraved with the Royal Arms of George II on one side and an illustration of a race horse and jockey on the other. Gift of Mr and Mrs Edgar Assheton-Bennett 1979.562
