He was born in Moss Side, Manchester, and studied and taught at the Manchester School of Art. He was a friend of the painter L. S. Lowry. Here Bold paints a Manchester housing estate, limiting his palette and removing all people to produce a poetic painting of a prosaic subject. Edna Bold gift 1980.163
