St Mark's, Venice
Edgar Wood A.R.I.B.A. 1860 - 1935
Summary
Impressionistic view of St Mark's Square, or Piazzo San Marco, Venice, with crowds of people littering the sqaure, looking towards the multi-domed building, which is the Church of Saint Mark dating from the fifteenth century . Whilst the paintwork is dappled and mottled, the famous Byzantine church is nevertheless captured in its full glory, set against a somewhat drab-looking, grey sky. The paintmarks are easily visible and the colour work is stark at times; this captures the church in a realist context, as the changing effects of light are documented. The colours of the painting reflect the overcast sky; greys, blues and yellows are used, all in flat, murky tones.
