George Lloyd
Summary
The fashionable young George Lloyd of Manchester has shaved his head and wears a stylish wig. His silk velvet coat opens to reveal a floral waistcoat. The ruffle on his shirt and his stock - the cloth round his neck - indicate that he was wealthy enough to display clean, fine linen. His luxurious, embroidered silk buttons probably came from Macclesfield in Cheshire. Lloyd was a man of fashion, but also an eminent scientist: after studying at Queen's College, Cambridge, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1737. He lived at Alkrington Hall near Middleton and later bought Hulme Hall in Manchester. Isaac Seeman came to Britain from Danzig in Poland (now Gdansk) with his brother Enoch. They both practised as portrait painters in London.
