Summary

Public: Baluster jug, cream coloured earthenware, transfer-printed overglaze in black with two groups of masonic arms, traces of gilt decoration remaining beneath lip. Private: Swollen baluster jug, with flared rim and foot, projecting sparrow beak lip and plain loop handle. Transfer-printed in overglaze black on side to left of handle, with scrollwork cartouche enclosing masonic insignia, comprising Freemasons arms within scrolling Rococo foliage, supported by two Freemasons standing amongst masonic objects. Inscribed scroll above reading 'AMOR / HONOR / ET / JUSTITIA', surmounted by seated figure holding pair of calipers, sun and sundial to right, moon to left. Receding chequered floor below, flanked by scrolls inscribed 'SIT.LUX' and 'ET.LUX FUIT'. Inscription overhead reads 'A HEART THAT CONCEALS, / AND THE TONUGE / THAT NEVER REVEALS', surmounted by trophy of measuring equipment and ribbons. Side to right of handle printed with scrollwork cartouche enclosing different insignia, comprising large pair of calipers measuring chequered floor scattered with various objects, open eye and scroll inscribed 'DEUM TIME / ET / REGEM / HONORA' at apex of calipers, semi-circular rule below, architectural columns and scrollwork to either side. Cartouche surmounted by small trophy of measuring equipment and ribbons. Traces of gilt and brown enamel decoration remain on side beneath lip. Cream coloured earthenware body, with greenish-yellow glaze.
