Summary

Head and chest portrait of a young woman with long dark hair pulled back in a low knot at the base of her neck. The subject wears large gold drop earrings and a dark shawl over her lilac dress, pinned at the neck by a gold brooch set with emeralds, pearls and a central ruby. Her head is turned slightly to the right and both hands are raised as she holds onto a long gold chain around her neck. Strong light falls across the woman's face from the left, throwing it into sharp relief against the dark shadowy background.
