A Street Scene in Manchester

Thomas Armstrong 1835 - 1911

Summary

A group of three slum children in dark back alley. Two boys are seated on the ground, one, on the left, looks down at the floor, his friend, to his right, looks across towards him. A girl stands on the right, leaning against the wall, a hoop in her right hand, an apple in her left. They are playing a game with pieces of stone laid out on the pavement. A bucket of coal stands in the bottom right corner. At other end of alley-way is a slum courtyard with more children and adults. A woman does the washing, some of which hangs behind her on a line, a young girl helping her, while a man looks on.
