Night and Day
Summary
A three-panelled hinged screen with one side depicting day, and the other night. Day: sketchy scene lit by a bright yellow sun in the centre panel diffusing into pale browns and pinks. Indistinct landscape on left and centre panels, sketchy interior on right panel including a wicker arm chair in the bottom corner beneath a wall lamp above. This screen was painted by Mary Potter in 1974 for the library/music room at the Red House, Aldeburgh, Suffolk It was commissioned by composer Benjamin Britten and his partner the singer, Peter Pears for their home. Potter had moved to Red House with her husband, the author Stephen Potter, in 1951. When her marriage ended in 1957, she exchanged her home for Crag House, the home of her freinds and neighbours Britten and Pears
