Study for Albert Square

Adolphe Valette 1876 - 1942

Summary

Preparatory study for the painting of Albert Square, executed in densely layered paint and capturing the atmospheric haze of smog-filled Edwardian Manchester. At the right edge of the sketch is the silhouette of the statue of Gladstone and at the centre left is the less distinct form of the Oliver Heywood statue. Below the Heywood memorial, at the lower left edge of the composition, can be seen the upright shapes of two motor cars. Slight shifts in the colouring of the background indicate the tall, surrounding buildings.
