Lover Variation 3
Summary
A field of predominantly acid yellow is divided by a wide black jagged motif. Two wooden ladder shapes are attached to the canvas and balance each other on either. There is a small chair painted in blue towards the top right hand side. Several poles in black and blue dissect the canvas and extend beyond its limits.Their shape is echoed on the canvas by black shadows. For Martin Naylor a work of art is 'a structure of pathos' which produces emotional effects in the spectator. He operates within a tense area 'between discipline and desire', his title for a series examining his complex and difficult relationship with women. This is one of a group called 'Lover' into which he incorporates painted and sculptural elements loaded with symbolism and suggesting both fragmentation and conflict. Naylor, a painter and sculptor, often combines the two. A Romantic-Expressionist, his concerns, in his own words, are 'passion, courage, decision, anxiety, commitment, will, ethics, transcience and mortality'.
