Exhibition Talk on Bellotto’s Königstein: A Witness to History

Illustrated online talk with volunteer guide John Ward

About this event

Volunteer guide John Ward visited Königstein in November 2021 and will be sharing many of its dramatic stories from up and down history.

How was it that back in 1756, Bernardo Bellotto was able to capture on canvas the compelling power of Königstein in a way that modern photography can never hope to equal? And why was the artist, a native of Venice, even in Saxony at a time when it was fast becoming the centre of a storm between Europe’s great powers?

Volunteer guide John Ward will be exploring these questions as he draws upon both Manchester Art Gallery’s highly acclaimed ‘Views on a Fortress’ exhibition and his own very recent visit there. Expect high drama and dark tales, along with some reflections upon time and human nature.

This event will now take place online as a Zoom webinar.

Zoom login details will be emailed 2 hours before the event.
