What can William Bromley’s Catherine of Aragon reveal to us about the act of giving, one of the 5 Ways to Wellbeing. Tour Guide, John Wards explains;
The artist has captured for us here all the elegance and atmosphere of an imagined lost age. But he has also invested this scene from Shakespeare’s Henry VIII with a feeling of intrigue and tension. Catherine of Aragon has just returned from a deeply humiliating experience in court and has found solace amongst her loyal ladies in waiting. The two cardinals seem to offer kindness and conciliation, but she clearly suspects their motives. True giving can liberate us from our selfish tendencies as we come to see happiness as a largely shared experience. Reflecting on the many examples to be found is this beautiful painting, we may well be reminded of just how giving can enrich our own lives with a renewed sense of purpose.
