Here John discusses Girl with a Beret, 1951-52 by Lucian Freud.
What then are we to make of the unknown girl’s solemn, weary expression?
“Can a portrait painting ever go beyond a person’s physical appearance so that it captures something of their true essence? This was a quest that Freud, one of Britain’s true greats, followed almost to the point of obsession. Typically, he would spend 150 hours in the presence of a subject so that he could represent them in the minutest detail. What then are we to make of the unknown girl’s solemn, weary expression and especially of the stare which issues forth from her almond shaped reflective eyes? Most intriguingly of all, the year 2014 saw the emergence of a powerful clue about her identity and subsequent life thus giving this remarkable work even greater resonance.”
