The Dutch Golden Age: Illusion, Innuendo and Worldy Wisdom
Manchester Art Gallery
Saturday 4 April 2020, 12.30pm–1.30pm
Step into the strange world of the seventeenth century Low Countries and experience the expanding horizons that nurtured so many startling innovations in painting.
Explore with gallery guide, John Ward, a new fascination with light and space as well as a preoccupation with the transience of things.
Delight also in the course comedy of our genre paintings and yet also grasp the serious moral messages contained therein. As we grapple with all the symbolism, our challenge will be to try and connect with a much earlier way of thinking and so bridge the gap between then and now.
