The Royal Academy did not admit women to its schools until almost 100 years after it was founded and took almost 150 years to appoint its first full women academician.
The rise of feminism in the twentieth century, as well as the changing roles of women, saw a shift in the status of women artists, many of whom appropriated particular art forms such as video, performance and installation to build a canon of feminist art.
Join this tour with guide Deborah Leftwich, to review the changing status of women artists and the portrayal of women in art, by focusing on a selection of works from the Gallery collection.
