A talk with Hetain Patel about living and working as an artist.
Manchester Art Gallery
Friday 27 September 2019, 3pm–4pm
Join us for a talk with Hetain Patel about living and working as an artist.
Visual artist and performance maker Hetain concludes his residency with Manchester-based arts ensemble Quarantine with this chance to meet and talk.
During his residency in Quarantine’s Tenancy house, Hetain is inviting local artists, curators and producers to join him for a chat and a cup of tea – and inviting anyone interested to tune in and watch via Facebook Live.
They’ve been discussing what it is to be an artist, how to balance making art with paying the bills, what is and isn’t working in the wider arts ecology, and how change can be brought about.
This event at Manchester Art Gallery is a chance to reflect on the week and to continue the conversation in person.
Hetain’s live performances, films, sculptures, and photographs have been shown worldwide, including at Manchester Art Gallery, the Venice Biennale, Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, Beijing and Tate Modern, London. Hetain made his first dance company work for Candoco in 2014, which continues to tour internationally. His video and performance work online have been watched over 35 million times, including his TED talk of 2013 titled Who Am I? Think Again.
He is interested in connecting marginalised identities with the mainstream in an effort to destabilise notions of authenticity and promote personal freedom. With an autobiographical starting point, his work uses humour and the languages of popular culture to highlight familiarity within the exotic; recognition within the unknown.
Curated and produced by Quarantine, Tenancy is a direct response to the rapid growth and urban development of Manchester and Salford. Through a series of artists’ residencies, projects and events, Tenancy is exploring how the cities are changing and what this means for the people who live here. Tenancy is part of Meet the Neighbours, a three-year cross-artform project co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme.
