Inspired by... is a national art competition for adult learners. Entrants produced their own artworks inspired by the collections at Manchester Art Gallery.
In 2008, the winning works were displayed at Manchester Art Gallery and runners up at Manchester Central Library, St. Peter’s Square.
Paintings, ceramics, glass, silverware and the architecture of the building have all been starting points for the art works in previous competitions. Winners were selected according to how imaginatively each entrant has responded to the gallery’s collections, and their creative use of materials, techniques and ideas.
The judges also consider how an entrant has benefited from their learning experience, either on a formal course, or through using the gallery in a self directed way.
Inspired by... is conceived by the V&A to celebrate Adult Learners Week and Museums and Galleries Month. The competition takes place at museums and galleries across the country, and 2008 was the fourth year that the competition has been held in Manchester.
