The Return: Hampdens Coming Home at Dawn

Paul Nash 1889 - 1946

Summary

An airfield landscape. Control tower to the left, corner of runway to the bottom left. One plane on the ground to the centre, facing away from the viewer; a second one in the air above the control tower, flying toward the viewer. The planes have two propellers. The Hampden was a bomb carrying plane. It was relatively fast and could carry a very large load, but it had meagre defences, so it was mainly used as a night bomber. private: verso - pencil drawing of a plane similar to those on the recto.
