There were market gardens in London growing fruit for Covent Garden and other London markets. Women carried fruit a considerable distance through the London streets. Many moved to London for this seasonal work. They were admired for their strength, ability to endure hardship and work ethic. Here, the young girl is dressed fashionably, suggesting wealth.
