The Death of the Stag

Francesco Bartolozzi 21 Sep 1727 - 7 Mar 1815

Outdoor scene with a stag on the left in the foreground. It is surrounded by dogs, one of them with its legs bearing down on its hind. Two females in classical style clothes stand to the left holding spears towards the stag. There is another dog to the right, on a leash held by a female figure on the right. Behind her there is a female turning back to the right seen from behind with a quiver on her back and pointing to the left with her right hand. Another female is in the background to the right blowing a horn. A monumental female figure, the Roman goddess Diana, stands in the centre looking to the right. Her right hand points to the left and her left hand holds a bow by her side.
