The Crypt of Kirkstall Abbey 1812 Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775-1851 Etching with mezzotintand aquatint This is an unpublished state from the Liber Studiorum, a series of prints designed and published by Turner. This print is unusual in that it is all Turner's own work; a professional engraver usually added the mezzotint. Turner has burnished the mezzotint quite heavily to convey the fall of sunlight into the dark crypt. Evidence of the mexxotint rocker can be seen around the edges of the print.
