Madonna and Child

Raphael (after) 1483 - 6 Apr 1520

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Raphael. The drawing shows a woman holding a young child to the left with her left arm curved around the child's front and her right hand supporting his shoulders. The woman is wearing a veil, which falls down the back of her head and leads to the thick drapery that covers the rest of her body. She appears to be partially seated and her left knee is raised. The child's legs fall straight downwards and are crossed, and he has his right arm raised with his hand at shoulder height in front of him. The features of the faces of the woman and the child are marked by simple shading with no detail. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 6 RAPHAEL (b. 1483; d. 1520) MADONNA AND CHILD Collection of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth. Black chalk. 41.2 x 22.5 cm. (16 1/4 x 8 7/8 in.) The Virgin sits in full face, an ample veil flowing from her head and behind her shoulders, and holds the Child against her right side, his body apparently but slightly supported by her right thigh. The design is of extreme suggestive beauty and tenderness, the method of handling the chalk, and to some extent the feeling of the drapery, still reminiscent of Fra Bartolommeo. The drawing probably belongs to the earliest part of the Roman period of the master. Marked with the initial of the dealer Flinck, from whom many of the drawings in the Chatsworth collection were purchased. Reproduced by permission of the Duke of Devonshire. SIDNEY COLVIN."
