Figure of a Youth

Venetian School

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing from the Venetian School. The drawing is just a fragment but clearly shows the figure of a boy or young man, seen from behind. The boy is wearing a loose cloak over tights, and he has short hair held down by a headband. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 10 VENETIAN SCHOOL (End of the fifteenth century) FIGURE OF A YOUTH SEEN FROM BEHIND Collection of the Hon. A. E. Gathorne-Hardy. Pen and bistre, with bistre wash. 26 x 9 cm. (11 3/8 x 3 1/2 in.) Judging alike from the style of the costume and of the drawing, one would place this somewhere in the Veneto, and for time in the last quarter of the fifteenth century. The figure is one of the fashionably dressed youths with parti-coloured leggings and loose cloaks who assist as spectators in Gentile Bellini's processions and in Carpaccio's histories. The drawing, in spite of its charm, lacks the purity of line and the perfect rhythm of Gentile's own work, but may well be by one of his school. The drawing is mounted on a piece of paper on which is inscribed in an old hand 'Pietro Perugino'."
