Bust Portrait of a Young Man
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Jacob Cuyp. It is a portrait of a young man, turned slightly towards the left and looking out at the viewer. The boy has dark hair and is wearing contemporary dress. His jacket has a wide collar trimmed with lace, and is fastened with small buttons down the front. Unusually for the drawings in this set from the Vasari Society, his face has been drawn in naturalistic colour. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 27 JACOB GERRITSZ CUYP (b. 1594; d. about 1651) BUST PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN Collection of Mr. C. H. Read, P.S.A. Black and red chalk. 25.8 x 18.7 cm. (10 3/16 x 7 7/16 in.) A young man, with long straight hair, the face turned slightly to the left; wearing close doublet, with falling collar, small puffs at the shoulder, and a single row of buttons down the front. Signed, Atatis 19 1630 Cuyp fe Drawings by Cuyp the elder, the father of the more famous Aelbert Cuyp, are exceedingly rare. His pictures are generally signed 'J. G. Cuyp', but the fact that Aelbert was only ten and Benjamin Gerritsz (Aelbert's brother?) only eighteen years of age at the time of the present drawing, renders our attribution fairly certain. It is not the work of a young or brilliant artist, but has the sturdy touch of the practiced hand which produced some of the soundest Dutch portraits in the earlier half of the seventeenth century. A. M. H."
