Summary

smart day/cocktail dress in lime green/white window pane-check with white cuffs and white collar, machine stitched in rows of green. CF opening to waist fastening with 5 green/white casein buttons on band edged with 2 rows of machined broderie anglais. Short zip below cf. Long sleeves gathered to cap shoulders and into plain white cuffs with double slits and double buttons (as cuff links). Side pockets. Full round skirt in 3 panels with cf seam. Unlined. Printed label cb "Jean Varon, London, 12, 100% cotton". John Bates began designing under the name Jean Varon in 1959 and by the mid 60s was one of the most influential fashion designers in London. He was chosen for Bath's Dress of the Year in 1965 and designed Diana Rigg's wardrobe as Emma Peel in the Avengers. He continued with Jean Varon until 1980.
