Summary

Preliminary study for 'Work'. Layout similar to main piece with navvies working in the centre. A young girl stands in the foreground with a young child in her arms and older children either side. On the left a man, carrying a dog under his arm, walks towards the viewer, his head turned to the right. A woman walks behind him holding a parasol above her head. Behind her is another woman. On the right a man leans against the railings, looking downwards. Behind him are several people sleeping on a grass bank, next to row of large trees. A man and woman can be seen in the distance on horseback.
