Double sided study of a workman drinking beer. The man tips his head backwards as he drinks his beer from a large flask in his left hand. His right hand grips a wooden brick carrier. He is dressed in a loose tunic with a neck-tie and a scarf tied around his head. The verso drawing is in red chalk.

70 Cartoon for the navvy drinking beer probably late 1850s Black chalk on paper Brown must have cut this out from a larger drawing. The lines are drawn more thickly on the back to enable him to transfer the outline to the canvas. Brown was probably working from a real model, although he may have been inspired by an engraving by William Hogarth, Beer Street, which features a similar man drinking from a tankard.
