70 Cartoon for the navvy drinking beer probably late 1850s Black chalk on paper Brown must have cut this out from a larger drawing. The lines are drawn more thickly on the back to enable him to transfer the outline to the canvas. Brown was probably working from a real model, although he may have been inspired by an engraving by William Hogarth, Beer Street, which features a similar man drinking from a tankard.
