Summary

Marble group with mother and child lying on a bed. The mother is asleep or dead but her arm still protects her child who looks up at her. The sculpture was commissioned by Henry McConnell, a wealthy Manchester cotton manufacturer. The sculpture is believed to be modelled on his wife Margaret, who died in childbirth in 1831, and his son James.
