The Handcart, Rue St Jean, Dieppe
Walter Richard Sickert 1860 - 1942
Summary
Study of a street scene with a town square in the background. Lining the street are tall buildings, mostly with shops at street-level and dwellings above with small balconies. A shop to the right of the street has baskets displayed on its outside walls; parked opposite, on the left of the street, is a cart depicted in outline. The open square beyond, which appears to be on an incline, seems filled with human activity; beyond the square the incline continues to rise with buildings ascending its slopes.
