Shop in Chagford
Walter Richard Sickert 1860 - 1942
Summary
Study of a shop front. The shop is viewed from the street, with part of a window and its open doorway to the left, the whole of a large window in the centre, and to the right, the fence, garden and corner of a house set back from the street. Standing in the shop doorway, in profile to the left, is the minute figure of a child; behind him, in the large shop window is an extensive display of clothes and hats. The shop sign is inscribed with 'COLLINS & Co. SUPPLY STORES'. To the right of the composition, propped against the shop wall, is the outline of a bicycle, largely erased, with a small figure standing next to its rear wheel. A grid has been drawn over the entire composition (squared) in pink ink.
