Seascape

John Brett 1830 - 1902

Summary

Wide panoramic view of rolling waves on a choppy sea. A single sailing boat is visible to the left centre of the composition, and in the distance beyond, the tide crashes againt an expanse of cliffs as they stretch across the coast. The sky is blue with thick clouds moving across the scene.

Seascape 1881 John Brett 1830-1902 Oil on canvas Room One of the Ancoats Museum focused on the sea. Alongside this Cornish subject by John Brett were two photographs of breaking waves and a copy of a view of Dover by JMW Turner. The Museum catalogue compared these images to provide an insight into the beauty of the sea and the means by which to represent it effectively. Horsfall Museum transfer 1918.414
