Summary

Public: Large two-handled loving cup, white earthenware, decorated with grape vines and inscription in silver lustre and copper red on a cobalt blue glaze. Private: Large cup with deep straight-sided bowl, lower bowl curving in sharply to thick hollow stem, everted rim. Stem has rolled knop halfway down and spreading foot. Two large loop handles with scroll terminals emerge from underside of bowl, flaring out and turning sharply to meet bowl rim. The whole decorated with light speckled cobalt blue glaze, darker in places. Upper bowl painted with long folded banner in yellow ochre, inscribed in dark brown silver lustre QUI NON LABORAT NON MANDUCET (He who does not work does not eat), and surrounded by dark brown stylized plants and grape vines with grapes in copper red. Lower bowl divided into twelve moulded petal-shaped panels radiating out from stem, each painted with stylized carnation motif in dark lustre, ground between panels filled in with lustre. Dark,almost black, lustre handles, pale iridescent lustre stem, streaked over dark blue-green glaze visible at edge of foot. Dark lustre interior over blue glaze.
