Summary

Black wool crepe mini cocktail dress in very simple shape with wide neck, cap sleeves and hem all trimmed with white tape lace. Op Art influence. Inner labels: 'Jean Varon, Pret a Porter' and 'Liberty & Co'. John Bates began designing under the name Jean Varon in 1959 and by the mid 60s was one of the most influential fashion designers in London. He was chosen for Bath's Dress of the Year in 1965 and designed Diana Rigg's wardrobe as Emma Peel in the Avengers. He continued with Jean Varon until 1980, but started his own label in 1974.
