Out of Town
Summary
Study of a young woman holding a baby in garden setting. The woman stands in front of a long bench, in profile to the right and supporting the baby with both hands. She wears a dark full length dress with purple detail, and a straw hat decorated with ribbon. The baby is dressed in a long white gown with a blue sash, and a white bonnet with blue and yellow detail. A small child in a smock and striped socks stands at the woman's feet; the child holds a bunch of grapes in its right hand away from a large turkey to the left. A house is visible in the background to the left, with trees and foliage in the middleground. In the far distance, a town is visible beneath a hazy overcast sky; birds soar above in the top right corner of the composition.

54 Out of Town 1848, 1853 Oil on paper, mounted on canvas The painting shows Brown’s first wife Elisabeth with their baby Lucy. It was originally sketched in Paris, and left unfinished, but he took it up again in 1853, updating the dress and hat and probably at this time adding the child trying to stop the turkey from pecking at a bunch of grapes. The view is from the Browns’ house in Kentish Town, then a leafy suburb ‘out of town’. Manchester City Galleries
