Summary

Public: Butter boat, soft paste porcelain, transfer printed overglaze, enamelled overglaze, black, with scenes of seasonal activites. Private: Butter boat, pointed oval base, gently fluted sides flaring to scalloped rim and projecting lip, angulr wishbone handle, high scroll spur at thumbrest, pad at terminal. Exterior relief moulded basket weave and scroll pattern, flowers at either side of central plain cartouche on opposite sides of form. Within cartouche transfer-printed overglaze scenes. Winter shows frozen lake with man pushing seated woman on sleigh, she holds muff and wears fur trimmed coat. Behind left man leans against tree, lifting leg to attach skate, behind right man skates, steam rising from him. Spring depicts garden scene with standing man and woman, she on left holds flower, he holds hat and spade and points to tree planted in urn to right. Left watering can, distant tree. Prints overlap relief moulded frame. Inner rim enamelled overglaze black diaper and foliage border.
