HAT - silk plush over stiff foundation, lined white silk straight sides, curving outwards slightly towards flat crown, brim curving up at sides, dipping slightly at back and front, bound black corded silk ribbon, black cloth band, lower half of sides lined fawn leather, fawn silk braid bow at back at top edge, inside crown stamped CASE - stiffened brown leather, lined red leather, padded lid lined red silk, oval in section, tapering towards bottom, concave lid with leather handle attached by strap fastening by lock Worn by Mr John William Mathews (1846-1898, Meole Grange, nr.Shrewsbury), a coachman and grandfather of donor.
