69 Cartoon for the mongrel late 1850s Pencil on paper The dogs in the painting wittily reflect the class and characters of their owners. The greyhound, dressed in a smart red jacket, belongs to the young and fashionably dressed rich lady. The bull-terrier pup belongs to one of the navvies, and the mongrel to the ragged children. In the painting the dogs look at each other with mutual suspicion. There is a fourth dog in the painting, a black spaniel just in front of the horse ridden by the MP’s daughter. 67 Ashmolean Museum Oxford.
