cocktail dress

Christian Dior, London

Summary

Cocktail dress in claret red silk satin; elbow length sleeves; low pleated cross-over neck; horizontal waist with box pleated skirt and full length inverted box pleat centre front; very full calf length skirt with 2 attached black net underskirts; CB zip to waist; underarm set-in gussets; woven label, black on cream 'Christian Dior Ltd London' and stamped '9686' See 2002.21 for similar model. Donor was given the dress by a wealthy neighbour in about 1958 (when she was only a girl of 11 or 12). It had been little worn and she fitted it well even at that age, so used it as a party dress, feeling like 'a princess'.
